A Serpent's Perspective on The Care and Feeding of Humans. (Or "How
I Got the Boys to Pay Attention to My Every Need.")
Hello, my name is Howie. My mother
said I am actually named Chameleo jacksonii merumontanus, which is
quite a mouthful. Our family name is Jacksons Chameleon, much easier to
remember. Anyway, I go by Howie now that I have a nice new adoptive home
here with John and the Wild One. The boys have asked me to put together
a few thoughts on what it takes to make humans comfortable with our kind.
I'd say the challenge is worthy of my effort and I figured to throw in some
ideas I've learned about from cruising the Internet with my buddy Snidley.
Snide is kinda like a big brother
to me, I don't mess with him and he pretty much leaves me alone. We have
our separate rooms in the spread here, which is probably a good idea, since
our habits are a bit different. He enjoys the heat and sun and splashing
in his little lizard pool. I like the quiet of my ficus tree and just hanging
around out of harms way. He spends way to much time running circles around
the homestead, but the boys don't seem to mind and he DOES catch the stray
crickets now and then.
Anyway, what I would like to say
is this: The Web is a wonderful place to explore and learn about herptoculture,
which is the care, feeding, health and breeding of Reptiles.. In particular
there are some very informative places worth visiting to learn more about
the Suborder of the Reptile class of animals refered to as Lacertilia or
"Lizards." Some of the best spots we've found will be mentioned
here and can be found listed on the Reptile Hotlist
here on 'Attaboy!
From a general standpoint, one of
the best sites we visit again and again is The
Herptocultural Home Page, a place full of information about all kinds
of reptile and some pretty good starting points for those interested in
lizards.
But I have a couple of real favorites and it's not hard to see why.
Both of these pages have to do with Chameleons of my sort and both are outstanding,
take it from one who knows. The first is Zed,
from another fortunate lizard with his own homepage on The Web. The other
is a fact-filled page specifically devoted to Chameleons in general And
is called Your
First True Chameleon. Get your human to check it out for you!
And of course you must visit the USENET group devoted to herpetology,
rec.pet.herp, which you can check out using Netscape or your News reader.
As time goes by I hope to present some new topics and also to publish
by memoirs here on the Web. But for now I preparing for a bit of a nap,
so Ciao! and happy surfing.
